AEW’s Spanish-language commentator Willie Urbina was fired on Saturday after mocking Hikaru Shida with a stereotypical Japanese accent during Friday’s Dynamite.
During commercials, while the microphones were apparently still audible to fans watching on Fite TV, the commentary team (Urbina, Alex Abrahantes, Thunder Rosa and Dasha Gonzalez) was talking about who would translate Shida’s upcoming promo on the show and Urbina was told to do it, then responded with a mocking Asian accent.
Thunder Rosa nervously laughed then said “shut up, wtf” (roughly translated) and “I’m gonna throw a pen at you if [Dasha] doesn’t.” Dasha then said, “She can speak English, jerk.”
A clip was recorded and posted to Twitter on Friday night, and Urbina was let go the next day.
Los comentaristas en español de @AEW se han burlado del acento japonés de @shidahikaru durante la pausa publicitaria previa a su segmento en #AEWDynamite.
Esto es inaceptable @TonyKhan.
