Sunday’s AEW Revolution 2024 event featured Sting and Darby Allin defeating The Young Bucks to retain the AEW World Tag Team Championship. This match was notable for being Sting’s final match of his wrestling career.
Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that AEW officials made the decision for Sting and Allin to win the match since honoring Sting correctly was “important” to the company. It was reported that AEW CEO Tony Khan and others within the company agreed to this decision.
AEW officials reportedly were adamant about wanting Sting to go out on top and as a champion despite the need for him and Allin to vacate their titles shortly afterwards.
In regards to the decision for The Young Bucks to not win the match, it was reported that this decision was made several weeks ago. It was also reported that the decision for Sting’s retirement match to main event Revolution 2024 was locked in shortly after Sting had initially announced his intention to retire at the event.
It was also reported that AEW officials had originally planned for their Revolution 2024 event to take place in the Midwest but changed their plans to Greensboro instead due to it being a more fitting location for Sting’s retirement.
