As noted before, AEW announced this past week that they will be holding a co-promoted event with CMLL in Mexico called AEW Grand Slam: Mexico on June 18th at the Arena Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico.
TheCubsFan reported that no United States-based promotion has ever held a show at the Arena Mexico prior to AEW’s announcement. It was reported that CMLL does run private sold shows in the building for sponsors and has rented the building to out to other promotions in the past but none from the United States. It was also reported that this will be the first time an outside promotion will be running an event at the Arena Mexico since Ultimo Dragon’s Toryumon Mexico show in 2019.
It was reported that some of the AEW talents who will work at this upcoming event will stay for two days to appear in the same building for CMLL’s Fantastica Mania Mexico 2025 event on June 20th. It was reported that some NJPW talent will likely appear at AEW’s upcoming show as well due to them traveling for the Fantastica Mania Mexico 2025 event.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that several Mexican-based AEW talents likely will not be able to work at AEW’s upcoming show in Mexico due to CMLL’s strict rules when it comes to talent who have worked for Lucha Libre AAA in the past.
Meltzer reported that these talents are expected to be RUSH and Dralistico and also speculated that The Beast Mortos and Bandido likely will also not be allowed to work at the show.
