As noted before, CM Punk has been pushing for his big return match to AEW to be against an opponent not named Chris Jericho. This match is currently planned to take place at the debut show of AEW’s new television series that is expected to be called Collision and be officially announced next week.
Fightful Select reported that while AEW officials currently have plans for a feud between CM Punk and Jericho to take place at their upcoming new Collision series, Punk had been pitching to face a different opponent for his return match over the past month.
It was reported that sources close to Punk stated that he has become increasingly interested in wanting to work with Samoa Joe and for Joe to be his return match opponent.
It was reported that they have yet to confirm from their sources if Punk’s pitch was for a one-off match or for an extended program for his return to AEW. It was also reported that they have yet to confirm if this match is actually happening or not due to their sources being quiet over anything related to AEW’s plans for the debut of their new Collision series.
Joe last wrestled for AEW at this past March’s Revolution 2023 event and has been working as a regular talent for Ring of Honor. Joe also last wrestled against CM Punk in August of 2005 in ROH.
