Orange Cassidy Comments on His Weekly AEW International Title Defenses on AEW Shows

In a recent interview with WrestlingInc.com, Orange Cassidy gave his thoughts about his current reign as AEW International Champion and his weekly defenses of the title on AEW shows. This interview was held prior to this past May’s Double or Nothing 2023 event.

“I’ll tell you what wasn’t my idea to get beat up every single week and defend this thing. When I got the All-Atlantic Championship in October, the idea was just really to beat Pac, and just finally get that win over him. And along with it came the All-Atlantic Championship and I didn’t really know what this title meant. I didn’t know what it was for. I didn’t really understand… It didn’t have an identity really, but it did have a lineage already of Pac who is obviously one of the best wrestlers in the world.

To live up to that, I ain’t got nothing to prove to anybody. I’m going to do what I’m going to do. It’s going to be what I want to do. But when I had the Independent Wrestling Championship early in my career on the Indies, I had this philosophy of, if you want a shot, I’ll give it to you. And I think I wanted to use this as a tool to get people on television that you normally wouldn’t see on television. Maybe somebody that works really, really hard that deserves a title shot. And I decided to make this title the belt that everybody else who wasn’t ranked number one could go after and show different styles, show different wrestling, show the wide variety of fantastic talent that AEW has. It’s just unfortunate that I’ll have to punch them all in the face to win this back. It was something I stumbled upon. I didn’t really set out to do that, it’s just what happened.”

In a recent interview with the Wilde On with Taylor Wilde podcast, Julia Hart gave her thoughts about how her training at the Nightmare Factory led to her signing with AEW. Hart stated “So there was nothing in Minnesota for wrestling, and then I saw I think it was an ad for the Nightmare Factory that said apply now. I was like, ‘I think I’ll just try it.’ I wrote like a fricking essay and then two weeks later, I think it was the day after my birthday, QT’s wife texted me and [asked] if I was still interested. I was like ‘Oh my gosh’, I remember I ran outside and told my parents I was moving to Georgia. A month later, I moved to Georgia and I started training and then three months after the camp, Cody asked me to come to AEW. The Varsity Blonds saw me and were like, ‘Oh my god, she fits our gimmick’ and that was it.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

In a recent episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, co-host Matt Hardy revealed that the Young Bucks wanted to do a “Too Sweet or Delete” cinematic match with The Hardys in AEW. Hardy stated “I think so. I think we were going to do somewhat of a program with The Young Bucks following that match (at AEW Double or Nothing 2022). Obviously, we were already advertised for that Triple Threat Ladder match which was gonna be for the titles which would have seen us most likely crowned as the AEW World Tag Team Champions, and we really wanted to get in the Too Sweet or Delete, like a cinematic match with The Young Bucks. That’s something both myself and Jeff (Hardy) and those guys had wanted to do as well so, I don’t know. Maybe that’s something that can happen down the road or whatever but it could have happened then, especially because they were very much heels and we were a bunch of babyfaces at that time. So I think you would have seen a couple more interactions with The Hardys and Young Bucks but I think ultimately, it was gonna be The Hardys working against some younger teams in the months following that if we would have won the World Tag Team Titles.” (Transcript h/t: PostWrestling.com)
