As noted before, Callum Newman had been out of action for NJPW since this past June’s Dominion 2026 event due to a shoulder injury. Callum had stated that same month stating that he was planning to compete in this year’s G1 Climax tournament despite his injury situation.
Saturday’s NJPW G1 Climax 2026 Night 1 event in Chicago, Illinois featured Newman defeating Yuya Uemura in a B Block tournament match.
Dave Meltzer reported in a recent episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio that his sources stated that Newman was medically cleared for an in-ring return on Monday, June 6.
Meltzer reported that while Newman did not appear to be 100% recovered during his match against Uemura, there was actually a good chance he might have not been able to compete for the first week of this year’s G1 Climax tournament. Meltzer speculated that NJPW officials could have just delayed his match by a week if worst came to worst for Newman’s injury recovery situation.
Following the release of the report, Newman responded on Twitter stating that his arm still hurts but it was his decision to compete in Saturday’s G1 Climax show and this year’s tournament.
“Tape and Tōkon My arm still hurts, but it was my decision to compete in the G1. I’ve got something to prove—not just to myself, but to everyone praying for my downfall.”
