The Motion Picture Association of America has joined with several other media companies and groups that have filed legal briefs stating their support for the estate of Chris Kyle in its dispute against Jesse Venture. As you may recall, the Kyle estate was ordered to pay $1.8 million to Venture over a statement in American Sniper that Kyle punched Venture after a memorial for another serviceman who had passed away. A federal judge in Minnesota upheld in November.
The MPAA noted in its filing that it was attempting to prevent defamation law from infringing upon First Amendment rights to free speech. They are joined by A&E Television Networks, Cox Media Group, E.W. Scripps Co., Gannett Media, Hachette, Hearst Corp., the New York Times and Time, Inc. in backing the Kyles.
