While most people were quite pleased with Samoa Joe’s debut, Josh Matthews was apparently not among that crowd. Matthews posted the following to Twitter, claiming that WWE was being “hypocritical” in acknowledging Joe by his well-known ring name:
How did the @WWENXT announcers know who @SamoaJoe was if we are #obscurity in their world? Sick of hypocrisy.

It is worth mentioning that WWE has often acknowledged Ring of Honor, where Joe also worked under that name to great success before going to TNA. WWE has considered TNA to be a non-entity in wrestling, not mentioning Sting’s TNA run and referring to him as away from the ring between his WCW run and WWE debut. It has generally been WWE’s policy throughout its history not to acknowledge their biggest United States competition, though there have been exceptions to the rule.
