Tom Phillips has been released by WWE, according to Fightful and other sources.
The release came some time within the past 24 hours, according to PWInsider, and wasn’t part of the round of firings and layoffs of other backstage staff earlier this week.
Phillips was replaced by Adnan Virk as lead Raw play by play man on April 12 and was moved to commentary on 205 Live. WWE also said that he would “oversee special projects for WWE’s programming on Peacock and at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando” and would “remain in his role of Senior Manager, On Air Talent.”
Yesterday, with the departure of Virk, WWE announced that Jimmy Smith would be the new Raw play by play man.
Phillips did commentary for tomorrow’s episode of 205 Live, which was taped at the NXT tapings on Tuesday.
He had been with WWE since 2012.
