As noted before, Lucha Libre AAA announced last month that they have stripped Kenny Omega of his AAA Mega Championship due to his injuries. The previously scheduled Mega title match of El Hijo del Vikingo vs. Omega for AAA’s upcoming Triplemania Regia II event was also announced to have been changed into a Five-way match for the vacant championship instead.
Sports Illustrated reported that their sources stated that AAA officials originally considered plans to hold a four-way match for the vacant Mega title with El Hijo del Vikingo facing off against three other opponents Omega had defeated during his reign as champion. This reportedly would have involved Fenix, Laredo Kid, and Dragon Lee as the other three opponents for the match.
Those plans reportedly were dropped due to Fenix, Kid, and Lee had already been booked for other matches and AAA officials did not want to make more changes to the card for Triplemania Regia II.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated that AAA officials had also been interested in the idea of booking Bryan Danielson as a potential opponent for El Hijo del Vikingo at the event. Meltzer reported that AAA ended up dropping the idea due to timing-related issues and Danielson’s likely high price tag for an appearance.
