As noted before, this past Friday’s WWE SmackDown season premiere and return show on USA Network featured the official debut of a new theme song for SmackDown. This new song is “Neva Play” by Megan Thee Stallion with RM from BTS.
PWInsider’s Mike Johnson reported that his sources stated that at one point there were expectations within AEW that Stallion would partner with Mercedes Mone.
Johnson reported that Stallion and Mone had met at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024 event this past February in Japan. This meeting reportedly opened up negotiations between Megan’s manager Mike B of Roc Nation and Mone’s manager Kevin Undergaro.
Johnson reported that those spoken to stated that Stallion and Mone had agreed to do something together, which Mone publicly mentioned the idea while promoting AEW’s All In 2024 event and the hope to get Stallion in teh ring in AEW.
Johnson reported that talks regarding Mone and Stallion doing something together in WWE while Mone was still with the company went as far back as 2021.
In regards to WWE’s deal with Stallion, Johnson reported that after Mone went public with her comments, WWE contacted Stallion and made a deal to have her song “Neva Play” be used as the new theme song for their SmackDown series. This deal reportedly caught Mone’s circle by surprise.
Johnson reported that it is currently not known if WWE’s deal with Stallion means Stallion would be prevented from working with Mone and AEW going forward.
