As noted before, Trey Miguel recently announced that he is taking a break from wrestling and was recently released from his contract with AEW that he signed with the company earlier this month. Miguel’s release was quickly speculated online to be due to past controversial homophobic and antisemitic comments he made on Twitter that had recently resurfaced online following his signing with AEW. Miguel’s release decision was also believed to have not come from anyone within AEW and instead “came from above” implying Warner Bros Discovery.
Fightful Select reported that their sources confirmed that Miguel’s release from AEW was a a decision that was made above AEW and heavily implied to have been from WBD.
It was reported that the decision was related to a past controversial online post Miguel made in 2020 that he had immediately apologized for it.
One WBD employee spoken to reportedly stated that they could not confirm the validity of the rumors regarding Miguel’s release and potential WBD involvement.
“I can’t speak to the validity of rumors, but I can’t say I agree [with] the decision if true. If it were an unhealthy pattern of behavior, that’s cause for alarm, but that does not seem to be the case here.”
It was reported that the internal reaction within AEW was one of “frustration” due to both Miguel and The Rascalz had shared a good relationship with AEW. Several talents reportedly also felt that there was a double standard that applied to AEW talent in comparisons to other personalities who have appeared on other WBD properties who have made far more controversial comments and were not taken off the air nor prevented opportunities to work with the company.
It was also reported that the constant belief from those spoken to is that no one in AEW was responsible for Miguel’s firing nor were in favor of his release.
It was also reported that those spoken to within TNA Wrestling, Miguel’s former promotion, stated that they never had any problems with him.
In regards to Miguel’s past controversial comments in 2020, Bryan Alvarez reported in a recent episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio that his sources stated that AEW officials had planned at the time to bring in Miguel but the reason why it did not take place was due to the same reasons related to his recent release. Alvarez speculated that AEW CEO Tony Khan likely thought five to six years later that he would take the chance to sign Miguel but this wasn’t going to fly with WBD.
