Luchasaurus on His Pneumonia Health Issues & Being Within Three Months, His Shoulder Injury, and His Goal To Return To The Ring By End of 2026

A recent episode of the Talk Is Jericho podcast featured Luchasaurus as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Luchasaurus thoughts about his pneumonia and other health issues that have kept him sidelined in AEW.

“We had no road to wrap it up because, creatively, everyone wanted something different, and I ended up getting sick. I got pneumonia, which took me into a situation where I was in bed with oxygen for a month. It got to the point where I was about to go out the door for Grand Slam. I was about to hop on the plane, and I had this cold that wouldn’t go away. Something inside of me was like, ‘I can’t get on that plane. I feel weird.’ I texted Doc (Sampson) and he told me to stay home. They covered for me creatively that week. They gave me antibiotics, but it wasn’t getting better. All of a sudden, I felt really bad one day. We thought it was maybe a pulmonary embolism. It was scary to think that.

They were like, ‘You actually have pneumonia, but it’s spread to both lungs. We can give you these meds and just pray.’ I started learning about how fragile your lungs are. (Brodie Lee) started with something similar to what I had, I’m not sure of all the details, but I do know that he ended up going on the ventilator, and that’s what you don’t want to have happen. If you panic on the ventilator, you blow your lungs, and everything is done. I never got to the ventilator. They just needed oxygen to get my oxygen back up and for the antibiotics to work. I was cleared within three months of it, but creatively, me and him [Jack Perry] found ourselves both at home for eight more months even though we were both healthy.”

Luchasaurus also gave his thoughts about his shoulder injury that he suffered this past December and how it happened.

“I was supposed to go maybe do a Santa Claus thing (at AEW Dynamite Holiday Bash), but you have to be ready to wrestle. When I got too excited because the Knicks won the (NBA) Cup, I was drinking on the plane and up all night. I didn’t sleep. They finally won something! I waited 40 years for this. We get there and Tony (Khan) is like, do you want to be in this battle royal? I’m not going to say no to the boss, who just flew me out here. ‘Yeah, let’s do it.’ It was a fun spot with Shelton Benjamin, he threw Ricochet to me and I caught him in a chokeslam. Somehow, my shoulder went ‘pop, pop.’ I had a partial tear when I wrestled [Jack] in 2022, that’s how dangerous he is [sarcasm], because when he works his friends, they tell you to hit the big guys as hard as you can …

I partially tore the rotator cuff and worked through it. We did a PRP injection and band-aided it for a while. Four years (later), they both went. It happened. I got the first one done in February. The surgeon wanted to wait six months, but we’re trying to do a faster timeline because we want to get back. I’m going to do the next one three months after, which is a little scary, but I want to get back as soon as I can. I wanted to do them both at the same time, but as soon as I got one done, I realized it would have been insane. It would have been a disaster.”

Luchasaurus also gave his thoughts about his goal of wanting to return to the ring from his shoulder injury by the end of 2026.

“Once they’re both done, it’s six months at the most, I would hope. If more than [that], it’s just because you gotta listen to the body. But I’m going to try my hardest to get back this year for sure. So we’ll see. Definitely just want to get the second one done because — this is not fun.”
