CMLL Reportedly Was Surprised By Negative Crowd Reaction To Mistico at CMLL 93rd Anniversary Show

As noted before, this past Friday’s CMLL 93rd Aniversario event at the Arena Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico featured Mistico defeating Averno in a Lucha De Apuestas, Mask vs. Hair match in the main event of the show.

Dave Meltzer reported in a recent episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio that his sources stated that the negative reaction Mistico got from many of the fans in the crowd who had booed him and cheered for Averno had surprised CMLL officials backstage.

Meltzer reported that one reason for the negative reaction by fans towards Mistico was due to the show having a lot more hardcore fans and fewer Americans and tourists than usual for CMLL’s Friday shows.

Meltzer also reported that before CMLL’s recent tourism boom, their major shows tended to draw more hardcore fans who were more likely to cheer popular rudos (heels) and boo técnicos (babyfaces).

Those spoken to reportedly stated that as soon as the Four-way Elimination match ended to setup the Mask vs. Hair match, everyone in the building knew what the finish would be. Meltzer reported that most fans decided to cheer for Averno because they knew he was losing anyways.

In regards to the backstage reaction, Meltzer reported that CMLL officials were very surprised over the large negative reaction Mistico received since they were not expecting that to happen on the show and were caught off guard by it.
