Shawn Michaels & AJ Styles Reportedly Consulted on WWE’s Plans For John Cena Classic

As noted before, this past May’s WWE Backlash 2026 event featured John Cena officially announcing a new event called The John Cena Classic and a new fan voted championship called the Cena Classic Championship. Cena had confirmed in an interview with Today earlier this month that his tournament would be taking place this December. WWE is currently believed to be holding this upcoming event on either the date of December 12 or December 19.

WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that there have been multiple meetings and creative discussions within WWE about the John Cena Classic.

It was reported that WWE officials wants to ensure that the John Cena Classic looks and feels fresh as a new concept for the company.

Those spoken to reportedly stated that various individuals who don’t typically weigh in on these types of projects in WWE were consulted, including Shawn Michaels and AJ Styles.

In regards to the current broadcast plans for this upcoming event, one source spoken to stated that while the initial idea was pitched as a showcase and milestone program for Club WWE, it will likely be streamed elsewhere instead.
