MassLive.com is reporting that John Cena’s selection as the celebrity starter for the Daytona 500 is being criticized by NASCAR fans. The criticism is falling along two lines; the first is that enthusiasts fear that being associated with pro wrestling legitimizes the opinion of anti-NASCAR fans that the sport is rigged, and the second is that NASCAR is “abandoning its roots” by using celebrities for big events.
Cena is a noted car fan and has been associated with NASCAR drivers in sponsorships, such as Gillette’s “Young Guns” series.
