This plan was based on the original announcement of 1 pre-show match for the event’s card. • As noted before, Andrade El Idolo is currently not expected to appear at AEW and NJPW’s co-promoted Forbidden Door event due to issues involving Lucha Libre AAA and Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre. Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated that the main issue revolves around CMLL being the main provider of Mexican-based talent for shows involving NJPW. This reportedly was the reason why CMLL does not have any issues with American-based talents such as FTR and Sammy Guevara working at NJPW’s co-promoted Forbidden Door event with AEW despite them also working on AAA shows. Meltzer reported that CMLL is also the reason why the AAA World Tag Team Championship is not being defended at Forbidden Door since their partnership rules do not allow AAA belts to be defended at shows involving NJPW.
  • Warner Bros Discovery officials currently are planning for AEW to have a heavy involvement in this year’s Shark Week festivities on the Discovery Channel, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Dave Meltzer reported that many promo ads featuring AEW talent have already been filmed and and AEW is currently working on plans to hold a gimmick match related to Shark Week during that week.
  • During a recent interview with Sports Illustrated, NJPW talent Hiroshi Tanahashi gave his thoughts about AEW and NJPW’s upcoming Forbidden Door event. Tanahashi stated “I will be the star of Forbidden Door. I mean, I did think of the name after all. When I first used the term, it was three years ago, and AEW had really only just gotten started. I don’t think anyone really knew how they would develop, but they had some great talent behind them, and I knew we would be onto something great if we crossed over. So coining that phrase, it was my way of putting things into the universe.” Tanahashi also gave his thoughts about facing off against Jon Moxley at the event. Tanahashi stated “If it’s up to him, this will get wild. But I’m expecting that. I can fight fire with fire. He’s a good bit bigger than me, and he has a reputation for being a street fighter. But he’s really precise with every little thing he does. Moxley rarely makes mistakes, and I respect that about him.
  • During a recent interview with Forbes, Wardlow gave his thoughts about his current goal to become the top needle mover television ratings star for the company. Wardlow stated “I’m very in tune with numbers, and my main goal for AEW is, I want to be the reason we have more viewers. I want to be the reason the female viewership goes up. I want to be the reason that 18-49 demographic goes up. I want to be the reason our ratings are higher. I know I can’t do it on my own. It takes help from the other young talent. It takes help from the legends and the guys coming over, but I want to be one of the guys that are moving the needle for this company. I’m very proud to say that I’m really an AEW original and an AEW homegrown [star]. I mean, nobody knew of me outside of the Pittsburgh/Ohio area. Maybe a handful of people in Chicago where I worked, but other than that, nobody knew me. I think it was beneficial for me to build myself from the ground up in AEW. I know with CM Punk coming to our company, that’s just a million more eyes on me also and on our company and on our product, and it’s only going to help us to grow. And in the end, once we grow, the guys that are taking the backseat are going to start getting more opportunities. It takes some patience, but it’s also for the betterment of the company.
  • During a recent interview with the AEW Unrestricted podcast, AEW CEO Tony Khan provided an injury update to Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish. Khan stated “We’re going to make the best of a bad situation with injuries. A long list of big stars out. Now, with another injury, you have Bullet Club coming together to get some revenge on Sting & Darby. Kyle O’Reilly, getting taken out by Sting, that’s a real life legitimate injury and Kyle O’Reilly is out, not sure how long, but it’s a big loss and we were not expecting that. He had been on fire for the company, it’s a big deal to lose Kyle O’Reilly. With Fish and O’Reilly being out, Fish just had a great main event with Darby on Rampage, that’s another big loss for the company, Fish, we expect back sooner from that ankle injury than O’Reilly with his injuries. Neither one is available for the pay-per-view. Kyle O’Reilly, we hope to get back soon. Bobby Fish, I know is going to be back soon.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

Japan is definitely included in the list of countries where I want to do an AEW tournament.” Khan also gave his thoughts about the Japanese market being very valuable for AEW. Khan stated “I think Japan is the most valuable market in Pro Wrestling. There are so many Japanese fans, smart, and passionate. AEW will be able to build a good fan base.” (English translation via Fightful.com)
  • During a recent episode of the Battleground podcast, Trent Beretta revealed the original plans AEW had for Wheeler Yuta’s storyline as a member of The Best Friends. Beretta stated “The way he got put in Best Friends was super weird and a hard situation for him to be in as a wrestler. Like, ‘Who is this new guy who is suddenly best friends with these guys I knew?’ The whole reason I was being upset with it is that we were planning on doing our own angle where we would eventually have a match and he would win my respect. I was like, ‘He needs something for people to grab on to.’ That’s why we did that, then it ended up working out a completely different way where I was mean to him for no reason and then he left.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

Omega stated “This may come as a surprise to people, but Cody is still in the game.I was very passionate about making sure his legacy and position within the company were preserved.“We’ve built this game from the ground up, starting everything from scratch. That’s why I thought this game could coincide with the birth of this company. You get to experience AEW from the beginning, from day one. The game is going to reflect a lot of that, even though our locker room is ever-changing.

Grace stated “Before the match, everybody was freaking out. I’ve never seen a group of girls that anxious before a match before. Even in the Ultimate X match, no one was that nervous. But I think it was because of A) there were the rules, and we had to think about who was in the box at a certain time and that was complicated in and of itself. Actually, something that we were told was gonna happen during the match, didn’t happen, which was that the timer was not on the titantron. {laughs} I think everybody was just so relieved that no one got hurt and it went as well as it did. Because everybody was doing these high-risk spots and I was like ‘I pray that I am in a position to catch people and that no one gets hurt.’ We did it, and I think we killed it. So we really had an uphill battle because A) in the first women’s anything there’s always so much pressure on the girls to do like an amazing job. 2) people already hate that kind of match {laughs} people were talking about how stupid it was, how complicated the rules were, so we really had two uphill battles to fight through. Watching everybody’s feedback and seeing that everybody really seemed to enjoy the match, I was over the moon about it, it could have not gone better for us.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

Meltzer reported that this also makes it more expensive for NJPW to run events in the United States and their L.A. Dojo for the forseeable future as a result. Effy reportedly was planned to win this third match and feud. Meltzer reported that scheduling issues had caused GCW to twice postpone their plans for the date for the second match and recently dropped all of their plans for the feud following Jarrett’s recent signing with WWE.

  • During a recent interview with the PWPonderings podcast, GCW owner Brett Lauderdale stated that the company is currently in the process of working on a new WWE Network-like streaming service. Lauderdale stated “I wasn’t insulted or anything by the article. As companies like ours grow and grow at the rate that we’re growing, there are challenges that come along with it and there are sacrifices that have to be made and obstacles that have to be overcome. It starts with the diehards, the people who do love the company and want to watch and attend as many as possible. It requires a bigger and bigger commitment with the more that we do. I’m aware that it’s challenging and it can be expensive for some people. Not everybody has the luxury to watch every show and pay for every show. For people that love GCW and want to see every show, it can be challenging and I’m aware of that. It’s something we’ve been working on and trying to address for some time now. Only recently, we had some obstacles be cleared, which will now give us the flexibility to do what we want to do. People have said explicitly that they would like to see a subscription network, a GCW network of sorts, that’s obviously something we’re working on. There are a lot of variables and things that go into it, a lot of potential ways to do it and right now, I just had a conference call on Tuesday with some major players to discuss potential opportunities and ways to do this and options. It’s just a matter of figuring out what is best for GCW, best for the fans, and being able to do it in a way that benefits GCW first and foremost. Something is going to happen eventually. Hang in there, for the people who are having to make those tough decisions. We’re trying to make it accessible for everybody. In the meantime, we’re going to keep offering as many bundles as we can on FITE to try and keep the cost down for those who do want to watch everything, ” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

This motion reportedly requested for the court to move up the Initial Case Management Conference between the two sides from its original date of October 27th to new date of September 29th. In the filing, MLW claims that they cannot begin discovery until the Initial Case Management meeting takes place and WWE has rejected their request to sit down for a conference at an earlier date. MLW stated that they “will suffer substantial harm and prejudice without the Court’s intervention because, under WWE’s interpretation of the Federal Rules, the Rule 26(f) conference would not be required to be held until October 6, 2022, more than four months after the motion to dismiss has been fully briefed.   During this time, the parties will be foreclosed from conducting discovery.” MLW also stated that “Moving the Initial Case Management Conference from October 27, 2022 to September 29, 2022 – the same date that the Court is set to hear oral argument on WWE’s motion to dismiss – would promote judicial efficiency and enable the parties to proceed with discovery more expeditiously.”
