This comes after the news that he is in the middle of a contract dispute with AAA, which is why he has been absent from recent events. AAA reportedly hasn’t paid him on time so he hasn’t appeared for the company this year.
AAA and Lucha Underground wanted Alberto Del Rio and Rey Mysterio to be their big stars, but Del Rio ended up returning to the WWE.
Mysterio’s name has come up on WWE programming in the past few months. WWE.com did a feature on him and JBL mentioned him during the Rumble.
