As previously reported, WWE medically cleared Daniel Bryan earlier this week for an in-ring return. One of the terms of WWE’s agreement with Bryan involved Bryan being required to take a mandatory medical test after every match that he participates in.
In an update to this situation, Newsweek reported that an email sent to them by one of Daniel Bryan’s doctors, Dr. Robert Cantu, stated that there was “no definitive evidence” of Bryan suffering a prior brain injury, based on the results of his medical tests. Cantu said that he personally evaluated Bryan on February 26th and came to the conclusion that Bryan’s brain lacked the signs associated with CTE and other brain illnesses.
“I evaluated Bryan for a neurological opinion on return to WWE on February 26, 2018. Included in his medical records were multiple evaluations by renowned concussion clinicians.
I determined that Bryan is currently asymptomatic, has a normal detailed neurological and cognitive neuropsychological examination, normal EEG, and an MRI that showed no definite evidence of a prior brain injury. It is my medical opinion that there is no absolute contraindication to his return to in-ring action in WWE.”
Dr. Cantu was one of three leading experts in the field of neurology specifically mentioned by WWE in their official announcement of Bryan’s medical clearance. Cantu is also the co-founder of both the Concussion Legacy Foundation and the CTE Center at the Boston University School of Medicine. Cantu also acts as a medical consultant for several teams in the NFL, NBA, and NHL.
