Vince McMahon Sex Trafficking Lawsuit Update – WWE & McMahon File Appeal to Prevent Discovery in McMahon Sex Trafficking Lawsuit
As noted before, former WWE employee Janel Grant filed a lawsuit in January of 2024 against former TKO Executive Chairman Vince McMahon accusing McMahon of committing sex trafficking and sexual abuse towards her during her time in the company. Grant filed a new amended lawsuit this past February detailing new evidence and claims against McMahon, John Laurinaitis, WWE, and others. Laurinaitis was officially dismissed from the lawsuit this past May in return for Laurinaitis helping to provide evidence for Grant’s case against McMahon.
Post Wrestling and Wrestlenomics’ Brandon Thurston reported that WWE and McMahon filed appeals on Monday arguing that the plaintiff has failed to meet the legal standard for pre-arbitration discovery. WWE and McMahon reportedly also accused Grant of seeking documents unrelated to the narrow question of whether she was coerced into agreeing to arbitration.
In his filing, McMahon’s attorneys stated “The Court should refuse to indulge Plaintiff’s [Grant’s] improper fishing expedition and deny the Motion in full.”
In their filing, WWE’s attorneys states “Grant is not entitled to motion-related discovery. She has entirely failed to allege sufficient facts calling into question the validity of the arbitration provision.”
In an official statement to Post Wrestling, Grant’s representatives stated:
McMahon and WWE are attempting block basic discovery requests “that go [to] the heart of whether the NDA and its arbitration clause are valid.
If they have nothing to hide, they should embrace this opportunity for transparency.”
In their filing, WWE’s attorneys claimed that Grant’s requests for evidence are a thinly veiled attempt to bypass the court’s earlier decision to hold off on a broader discovery phase.
“Grant’s document requests are a transparent attempt to circumvent the Court’s stay order and initiate full merits discovery before the Court is able to decide Defendants’ motions to compel arbitration.”
McMahon and WWE reportedly both also cited case law and argued that to legally obtain discovery, Grant must show that there is “reliable evidence” that she was coerced not just into signing the NDA but specifically that she was coerced into agreeing to the arbitration clause portion of it. McMahon’s attorneys also claimed that if Grant was actually coerced in any sense then the evidence for it would already be in her possession.
Thurston reported that both WWE and McMahon also argued that the evidence Grant is seeking related to the Securities and Exchange Commision’s (SEC) order against McMahon has no relevance to whether the arbitration clause is enforceable.
