WWE is among the channels believed to be included in a new YouTube subscription plan that is expected to be announced as soon as this week. According to The Financial Times, Google is set to make the announcement that up to fifty of YouTube’s most popular channels will cost a subscription fee starting in the vicinity of $1.99 per month. While WWE is not confirmed to be on board yet, they are among the potential partners as well as Machinima, The Onion and Howcast.
A YouTube spokesperson said, “We’re looking into creating a subscription platform that could bring even more great content to YouTube for our users to enjoy and provide our partners with another vehicle to generate revenue from their content, beyond the rental and ad-supported models we offer.”
WWE recently announced a deal to offer their content on Yahoo!; how that affects this plan (or whether the YouTube subscriptions) influenced the decision to go to Yahoo!) is unknown.
