AEW Week 147 Update – August 3rd

As noted before, the August 3rd episode of AEW Dynamite drew 938,000 viewers, a 0.32 key demographic rating, and a #1 key demographic ranking.

This week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter featured detailed viewership and key demographic breakdowns that were not available in last week’s issue due to Nielsen-related ratings report delay issues.

Dave Meltzer reported that AEW’s Males 18-34 was up 23.1%, Females 18-34 was down 1.4%, Males 35-49 was down 12.1%, and Females 35-49 was down 11.8% compared to the prior week’s show.

In terms of the one million viewership milestone, one of AEW’s eight quarters drew one million or more viewers. AEW’s quarter peak was at 1,020,000 viewers for their first quarter and their quarter low was at 885,000 viewers for their third quarter.

AEW Dynamite quarter hour viewership breakdowns were:

  • 1Q – 1,020,000 overall viewers and 444,000 key demo viewers
  • 2Q – 980,000 overall viewers and 451,000 key demo viewers
  • 3Q – 885,000 overall viewers and 396,000 key demo viewers
  • 4Q – 915,000 overall viewers and 404,000 key demo viewers
  • 5Q – 944,000 overall viewers and 422,000 key demo viewers
  • 6Q – 946,000 overall viewers and 430,000 key demo viewers
  • 7Q – 922,000 overall viewers and 435,000 key demo viewers
  • 8Q – 892,000 overall viewers and 407,000 key demo viewers

More on WWE NXT Viewership for August 9th

The August 9th episode of WWE NXT saw NXT suffer a large drop in overall viewership and key demographic rankings and a slight drop in key demographic ratings

NXT drew 597,000 viewers and a 0.13 key demographic rating on USA Network. NXT’s key demographic ranking for that night was 20th place.

Detailed viewership and key demographic breakdowns were not available in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Dave Meltzer reported that the main reason for NXT’s declines this week was due to the large declines from their Teenagers and older key demographic viewership groups, which were down 28.6% and 16.7% respectively compared to last week’s show. Another reason reportedly was due to the very large decline in their female key demographic viewership group, which was down 44.4% compared to last week’s show. This reportedly offset the large gains from their younger key demographic viewership group, which was up 16.7% compared to last week’s show.

In terms of head-to-head competition, the 2022 Little League World Series 7PM game drew 865,000 viewers on ESPN, the 2022 Little League World Series game of Henderson, NV vs. Santa Clara, UT drew 642,000 viewers on ESPN, Below Deck Down Under drew 664,000 viewers on Bravo, and Deadliest Catch drew 833,000 viewers on Discovery Channel.

In terms of key demographic viewership, NXT had 169,000 viewers. Meltzer reported that the male/female viewership split was 136,000 male viewers and 33,000 female viewers. Meltzer also reported that NXT’s male/female viewership split of 80.5% in favor of males for this week’s show likely broke the record for the highest male percentage split for a WWE show in WWE history.

In terms of yearly comparisons, NXT was down 20.5% in overall viewership and down 30.7% in key demographic viewership.


More on AEW Dynamite Viewership for August 10th

The August 10th episode of AEW Dynamite saw AEW gain a large increase in overall viewership and a slight increase in key demographic ratings. This week’s show was notable for being the Quake By The Lake themed special.

AEW drew 972,000 viewers and a 0.33 key demographic rating on TBS. AEW’s key demographic ranking for that night was 1st place.

Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the main reason for AEW’s increases this week was due to the large gains from the older female key demographic viewership and Over 50 viewership groups, which were up 47.8% and 13.5% respectively compared to last week’s show. This reportedly offset the declines from their Teenagers and younger key demographic viewers groups, which were down 22.2% and 13.7% respectively compared to last week’s show.

In terms of head-to-head competition, the MLS 2022 All-Star game drew 1,199,000 viewers on Univision, the MLS 2022 All-Star game drew 334,000 viewers on ESPN 2, the 2022 Little League World Series game of Peoria, AZ vs. Rocklin, CA drew 611,000 viewers on ESPN, the MLB game of Chicago White Sox vs. Kansas City Royals drew 201,000 viewers on FS1, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills drew 1,161,000 viewers on Bravo, and Real Housewives of Dubai drew 478,000 viewers on Bravo.

In terms of key demographic viewership, AEW had 433,000 viewers. AEW’s Males 18-34 was down 4.5%, Females 18-34 was down 28.6%, Males 35-49 was up 1.1%, and Females 35-49 was up 47.8%.

In terms of the one million viewership milestone, two out of AEW’s eight quarters drew one million or more viewers. AEW’s peak quarter hour viewership was at 1,064,000 viewers for their first quarter while their quarter low was at 926,000 viewers for their sixth quarter.

In terms of yearly comparisons, AEW was down 0.7% in overall viewership and down 4.6% in key demographic viewership.

  • 4Q – 948,000 overall viewers and 407,000 key demo viewers (Luchasaurus vs. Anthony Henry, Christian Cage & Jungle Boy backstage segment, Miro video promo, Powerhouse Hobbs & Factory backstage segment, and the JAS backstage interview segment)
  • 5Q – 950,000 overall viewers and 409,000 key demo viewers (Ricky Starks vs. Aaron Solo, Gunn Club & Stokely Hathaway backstage segment, Best Friends & Trustbusters backstage segment, and start of the Jade Cargill vs. Madison Rayne TBS Championship match)

More on AEW Rampage Viewership for August 5th

The August 5th episode of AEW Rampage saw AEW gain a large increase in overall viewership, key demographic ratings, and key demographic rankings.

AEW Rampage drew 468,000 viewers and a 0.15 key demographic rating on TNT. AEW’s key demographic ranking for that week’s show was 5th place.

Detailed viewership and key demographic breakdowns were not available in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the main reason for AEW’s increases that week was due to very large gains from their younger key demographic viewership group, which was up 125% compared to the prior week’s show. Another reason reportedly was due to the large gains from their Teenagers group, which was up 66.7% compared to the prior week’s show, and the weak sports competition that night.

In terms of head-to-head competition, the MLB simulcast games of San Diego vs. Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado vs. Arizona drew 237,000 viewers on MLB Network, the Premier League Lacrosse game of Cannons vs. Redwoods drew 150,000 viewers on ESPN, and 90 Day Fiance First Look drew 718,000 viewers on TLC.

In terms of key demographic viewership, AEW had 195,000 viewers. Meltzer reported that the male/female viewership split was 123,000 male viewers and 73,000 female viewers. Meltzer also reported that week’s Rampage show did not rank in the Top 10 youngest skewing sports show for the week while that week’s Dynamite was the third youngest English skewing sports show, only behind two English Premier League games.
