AEW Reportedly Had “Plan B” Finish for Sting’s Retirement Match If Darby Allin Could Not Continue

As noted before, Darby Allin suffered a lacerated back injury at this past Sunday’s AEW Revolution 2024 event in Greensboro, North Carolina. Allin suffered the injury following a spot where he performed a Swanton dive off of a ladder and landed on a big panel of glass that was held up by several chairs. Despite the gruesome nature of his injury, Allin was revealed to have only needed twelve stitches to close up his wound and he was medically cleared for his upcoming climb of Mount Everest.

Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso reported that his sources stated that Allin was the one who pushed for the glass breaking spot since this was the one spot he wanted to do above all else for the match. AEW officials reportedly were very aware beforehand of the dangers of the spot and had a “Plan B” backup in place for the match’s finish should Allin not have been able to continue. This backup plan was not needed in the end due to Allin was able to continue for the match’s finish.

Barrasso reported that nearly everything about the match went the way that those involved had hoped it would going into it.

Barrasso also reported that AEW had applied safety measures for this match with the match rehearsal being held earlier than usual and a stunt coordinator giving instructions on how to place the items to make the spot as safe as possible. This stunt coordinator reportedly also reviewed the proper protocols and doctors were on standby nearby due to them being on high alert about the spot.

Barrasso also reported that The Young Bucks were also prepared to call for the alternate finish following Allin’s glass breaking spot.
